FAMILY SUPPORT WORKER POSITION ADVERTISEMENT

35 HOURS PER WEEK – PERMANENT

 

Under the direction of the North Okanagan Friendship Center, Executive Director, the Family Support Worker will provide Child Protection and Family Support Services, in a culturally appropriate and sensitive manner, in the Vernon District. Services to be provided within the parameters of the Protocol Agreement between the North Okanagan Friendship Center and the Director of the Ministry for Children and Families.

CHILD PROTECTION:

The safety and wellbeing of the child is paramount at all times.

  • Work with Ministry of Family Development
  • Work with the Ministry of Family Development and Planning
  • Work mainly with Parents
  • Grief and trauma related issues
  • Addiction issues

 

 

FAMILY SUPPORT SERVICES:

The priority of the Family Support Worker services will be families where protection concerns have become apparent, and where children can safely remain in their homes with provision of support services. Where time permits, general family support will be provided to Indigenous people in the urban area of the North Okanagan served by the Friendship Center.

DUTIES:

  • Conduct assessments of the services needs of families requesting voluntary family support services and provide consultation to protect Social Workers in assessing the needs of families who are referred for Family service through the Child Ministry Program.
  • Assist families to identify and reach their goals through:
  • Referral to appropriate community service agencies
  • Aiding families and individuals in assessing these services
  • Assisting families to develop supportive social networks
  • Maintaining regular contacts with family services
  • Assist families to redefine their goals as required
  • Monitor and evaluate the success of intervention services by regular tracking of the progress of families in reaching their goals
  • Act as a consultant to Ministry for Children and Family Services in the planning and provision of family support services. Both from an individual and a community developing perspective. Support services include but not limited to: Parenting, skills training, basic life skills, budgeting, home management training, referral, and advocacy.
  • Participate, as required, in case conferences, meetings with social workers, and other agencies.
  • All other duties as may be assigned by the Executive Director of the North Okanagan Friendship Center.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

  • Submit monthly progression reports to Executive Director
  • Attendance at the Board of Directors Meetings if requested
  • Maintain accurate program statistics in accordance with the requirements of the funding body and the North Okanagan Friendship Center
  • Accountable for your professional conduct to your clients, supervisor, and colleagues

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Social Work or a rated degree may be considered or a combination of education and work experience.
  • Indigenous Persons are Preferred
  • Experience working with Indigenous People
  • Ability to work cooperatively as a team member
  • Absolute maintenance of confidentiality and 100% no-risk to Clients
  • Experience in facilitating training programs and workshops
  • Clear Vulnerable Criminal Record check
  • Must have a valid Drivers Licence and reliable transportation

 

REQUIRED SKILLS & KNOWLEDGE:

  • Excellent assessment skills
  • Strong positive communication skills both verbal and written
  • Mediation and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to effectively plan and organize
  • Works well independently, initiative and self directed
  • Good understanding and knowledge of Family Systems
  • Familiarity with community services and agencies, roles, and responsibilities
  • Strong ethical standards and principles
  • Ability to facilitate “Mothers for Recovery” working groups preferred.

Hourly wage, 35-hour per week, benefits available following probation , parking provided.
